This is a well known effect in experimental psychology called the Stroop effect. It was discovered in 1935 by JR Stroop, and has been replicated many times since then. You can find the original paper at http://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Stroop/, and a variety of other similar tests by searching for "Stroop effect".

ha, fun.

i'll tell you a trick. pick the word that isn't the target word. you don't even have to read the whole thing, it's a lot easier if you just match the word without reading it. leave out the cognitive process, and you'll do swell.

that's what we call a confounding variable kids!

I cheated with mine, i try not to read the word, but look at the last letter (not the first because your mind will try to work out what word it is), and focus on the colour. DONT think about the word. The only reason i got 0% the first time is because i didn't read the question lol. pretty amusing though

I actually prefer the origianl Tears for Fears version of Mad World to the Gary Jules/Andrew thingy version. Just thought I'd throw that randomness in there.

And yeah. We 'pwn' people who don't get 100% first time

Well I learned that I'm really slow.. it took me like 6 times through the test to completely separate it. I gradually got better but it was hard fighting the urge to pick the wrong one.

Im sure I am trying to show off the fact that I cant see colour for shiznit, and laugh at my own disability.. actually, fyi i happen to be blue-purple green-yellow-brown and red-orange-yellow colourblind, also known as 'Shade-blindness' ie i cannot see shades of colour.. but if you want to think im making it up thats cool =)

EDIT: btw, I have publicated this on the old forum when we had to say what our favourite colour was and give an example.
