I have a question (which I will ask first) and a suggestion.

During the time I was away from NightMist I played other games (which I will leave nameless) that had a lot of graphics. Different armors, spell effects, kind of like what you would find in the very popular online Blizzard hosted game (everyone should know the game that the company Blizzard has that is known world wide). While I was there I found out about .dds graphic files and how to edit them so you could give your client a personal touch. Kinda like a skin here.

Well I am getting to where I want to do edits to this games client. Somethings that have no pics I have ideas for pics. I have different ideas for some items that already have pics. My question is: Is it ok for me to edit my client graphics? Some of the other games I played frowned upon client edits of any kind but I never saw the problem with the graphic files being edited because I never changed the game for anyone. It was only eye candy for me. So is there a problem with me editing the given pics for items?

As for my suggestion I was wondering why there is not a Skins section on the forum. If I do client skins I would like to show them off and offer them for download to those who want them. I would also like to take requests. Having a section just for that would tidy up posts in other sections about skin stuff.

I know this probably has been suggested before, in fact my memory of my beginning in NightMist is a little fuzzy but I want to say there was a Skin section on the old forum when I first started.

You have a few options with respect to graphics:

1) If you find things in game that have no image associated with them, submit one. You can post it to the forum or send it directly to Elf (who is in charge of all things colorful).

2) If there are particular things that you would rather show up as a different picture, just find the appropriate image file in the /gfx folder wherever Nightmist is installed on your computer and replace it. The game will still run just fine, and it will only change how things look on your screen. For example, if you want to replace the picture for rope, simply replace 1009.jpg with your own image. If you keep things the same size, the game client will run faster for you.

All of this is possible without editing the client application. Edits to the client application itself can result in you being banned, so I'd avoid that. (Most of the graphics-related stuff isn't stored in the client anyway... it's on the central server.)

As for a forum section, I don't see any need for a whole section when there are so few posts related to skins. You're welcome to post them in the Development forum, and there are already some good examples there from Shakazulu [thread].

No problem on the section suggested, it was that only a suggestion.

As for the client edits I wasn't talking about editing the clients function, just its looks. Everything would stay the same with the exception of moving things around and changing the graphics.

The part about the pics I'll send my ideas in. But if they aren't accepted would it be ok for me to keep the change in my client?

Yes, perhaps comprehension of a question is not in your list of things you are good at. Maybe it is because you have spent all you time just here in this little world. Try going to another game, asking if its ok to do certain edits, being told that yes its ok to do those certain edits, then going through hell for a year and a half because you didn't clearify what you were wanting to edit when you said graphics.

Very touchy. I don't even got NM installed, but yea... nice story telling.

It's called using common sense...and Trev was being very clear. Stop trying to look interesting and just change the damn pictures already.

A some sort of modding/user content subforum for the development section would be kinda neat to have.

For skins, icons, maps, fan art etc.
