I broke down and bought Erica a computer because the indentation from her big ass in my chair was becoming uncomfortable.

Problem is I can't get the router to work to share a connection. I use Charter cable as my provider. The router (Linksys BEFSR41) clearly states on the front of the box that it is compatable with Charter Cable.

The product is clearly marked saying to install the software first. The first part of the setup process is to detect my connection. It says I am not connected to the internet, but I am!!!

Now what I have done. I installed a ethernet card in my PC (Hers came with one). I connected everything as shown on the instructions. Then tried once again to detect a connection, but no luck.

I believe the prolem is with my modem. On the back I have 4 holes.
1) Power
2) USB
3) Ethernet
4) Cable In

Currently my computer is set up to recieve an internet connection via the USB cable because prior to this I had no ethernet card. When I remove the USB cable and install the ethernet cable I lose my connection. So with all that being said:
Question 1 is how do I get my connection to work through the ethernet wire?
Question 2 why isn't the software provided by the router company seeing my connection?

Not guarenteed to work, but I know when I've tried to connect mine it won't detect at first. So I hook everythin up like it should be, then there is a small reset button on the back of the router. Hit that. Sometimes routers are stupid and don't allow foreign things to connect aka anything it hasn't seen before. When you reset anything connected usually becomes friendly to it. I'm sure someone who knows networking will be along to help soon tho.

a common problem
your isp is only allowing 1 mac address to get a dhcp lease at a time OR your usb is overriding it

ideally, you want ethernet in both machines, connected to the LAN ports of the router
the WAN port on the router should be connected to the ethernet port on the modem

turn on the modem first, wait 1 minute, then turn on the router, wait 1 minute, then turn on the pcs.
