Unique Race Languages

Obviously, all players would start off knowing how to speak 'common', a language understood by everyone in the realm. In addition, they would know a language corresponding to their own (elves and elvish, dwarves and dwarvish) that only their kin would understand. Anyone who is not part of their fold, would simply read jibberish.
Algorithims to change text could be kept simple - increasing a character's ASCII code by three or four randomly (unless it exceeds its case in which case it would just be decreased) or decreasing it by two or one randomly. (Perhaps random race-specific words would be thrown in randomly)
Players would be able to learn another language for an insane amount of money and time (during this 'training' period, random jibberish would be thrown into their text, implying that they are still learning the language - training time would be reduced eventually to nothing by saying so many characters in general chat).
The command could be /togglelang [race or 'common'] or simply /lang [race or 'common'].
It would not work in clan/friend/enemy/party chat. This is restricted to general chat.

You can if you reeeeally want... it just means you actually have to go way and learn it outside of the gamePersonally I would like to speak the Drow language!
You just wouldn't be able to use it as a race language because there isn't a playable drow race.
So what language will humans speak? More common?
Humans should be speaking human
I'd be more interested in what language a Half-Elf would speak.
(And perhaps a Half-Orc)
I presume he means that while you are "learning" a language you are training in it... every time you speak (the language you're learning?) in general chat (or perhaps have someone speaking the language you're learning to you?) you reduce your training time, and when your training time is reduced to nothing, at that point you have "learnt" the language, and will understand it from that point onwards. What do you mean by training time being reduced to nothing?
Unfortunately:
Some would... but I can't think of many players who would be willing to shell out on the money and time to do this when they can get away with speaking common.Players would be able to learn another language for an insane amount of money and time
(Gah, I will make the quotes work >_<)

Have you ever tried to learn a second or third language completely? It's not an easy thing to do and it takes years to master it. If you have a sincere want to learn a language, you'll go through all the necessary steps to learn it. If not then simply speak common. There's no real shame in that.

I don't think there's really anything wrong with that. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if only two or three people in the entire elf community could speak Halfling or Human.
And really, that's how it is today. There are only a handful of Americans that can speak...oh...let's say Taiwanese.
yey, something from starwars galaxies
I never played. It wouldn't surprise me if that game had this, though. I was more basing this on DnD.

If it bothers you so much (and for whatever reason, you don't want to move off the square), simply learn the language. Anata baka!
and lots of work
I'll agree that it's not exactly one-line of code but it's certainly less work and grief than adding another class or something like that.
i don't think many others would use it on regular basis.
Yeah, that's probably true. Most people would probably speak common and only speak their native tongue when they wanted to sound smart or to insult someone. Of course, if someone starts to speak to you in a different language and you don't understand, you should probably learn the language yourself.
