maybe i should explain it to you as if it's a dialogue between two puppets.Staff say not to share
Staff also say not to use vulgar language... If you do, you're banned, that's your punishment
If you share, you run the risk of getting jacked. If you do, that's your punishment.
Oscar the otter: gee, i just don't get it, the JLH man says we shouldn't do something and tons of people do it anyways! don't they know it's not safe?
Socrates the Sock: well Oscar, you tell me, why would someone share, even though the wise JLH warns us all of the dangers?
Oscar the otter: well, i don't know maybe they're dumb?
Socrates the Sock: maybe you're dumb, try harder... why would they act so unwisely?
Oscar the otter: shucks, i'm stumped. um... maybe they've never been betrayed by someone they trust?
Socrates the Sock: so it would be not uncommon to infer that they're either lucky or young, correct?
Oscar the otter: i'm not sure i follow...
Socrates the Sock: man you are dumb. wouldn't it be more common amongst the young to have never been tricked by someone who seemed trustworthy?
Oscar the otter: i still think they're dumb.
Socrates the Sock: ah yes, but that is another trait of the young, is it not?
Oscar the otter: well yes, that's why we kids go to school, to be un-dumbed!
Socrates the Sock: so it's the young who are characterized by thier inexperience and naivete, true?
Oscar the otter: 'tis true.
Socrates the Sock: and you say that's why we teach them?
Oscar the otter: to give them knowledge and experience to handle life, teacher.
Socrates the Sock: ah yes you are correct glauco- err uh, Oscar. now would it be wise to expect them to never falter when they have no personal reason to believe they would?
Oscar the otter: well of course they would make mistakes, that's how we learn sometimes.
Socrates the Sock: so would it not be unwise to limit the amount that someone can hurt themselves and others when they make a mistake, if we can?
Oscar the otter: well if they're going to do it anyways, and it helps them learn, i suppose not.
Socrates the Sock: and if a community is almost entirely made up of the young people, wouldn't that make it more important to limit the damage they cause eachother?
Oscar the otter: i suppose so. why should the naive pay for the crimes of the unethical?
Socrates the Sock: and why should an entire community have to be bludgeoned by a parade idiocy whenever it happens?
Oscar the otter: i believe i see what you mean. you're saying that just as a community would accomadate sheltering a youth from others we should do what we can to protect the less wise from themselves until they are wise enough we need not bother. Socrates you are a genius!
Socrates the Sock: oh no, you are Oscar, i merely sifted for what you already knew to be true.
i'm sorry mooney that i couldn't provide you with actual puppets, but i hope you can imagine it yourself and make humorous voices for the characters. if your parents let you play with needles and threads you can do what i do when i'm suffering from a severe head injury need sock puppets to understand simple concepts. take a needle, some thread, two socks, and four old buttons and sew two buttons on each sock to resemble eyes. then draw or sew on any other facial features and you have two new friends ready to engage in hilarious yet educational shennanigans.
