System:

AMD Duron 2800+, 512MB memory, 128MB AGP Graphics memory. Win2K updated with the latest fixes.

What happens is, when logged on a party of 10 alts, moving maxes out the CPU. I would have thought that moving mostly generated network traffic, not CPU cycles.

There is no paging on the sytem and I can find no reason for this behaviour. Therefore I believe the trouble lies in the NM client. JLH is it possible for you to detect which client window(s) are visible on desktop, (usually the current window and one other), and limit CPU usage on hidden windows?

Edit: I know I can /scroll most crits and save CPU that way, but I would rather not ^_^

Displaying text in the window by itself does not take up much CPU power, but when you have 10 such windows with rapidly-changing text, it drains the CPU and whites out some of the windows. The solution is to use less alts or type /scroll on windows where you don't often look at the text display, such as covert mana carriers and the like.

Oh yes, the other factor is the operating system... the Windows NT family, including Windows XP, is designed to run multiple applications, whereas Windows 95/98/Me is not (running 4 alts will crash the system most likely). But I would have thought that there would be little difference between 2000 and XP in how well it can run multiple applications.

as muse said, the text buffer is the main usage of cpu time (the big text box).

Ty for answers. Seems to work fairly well with 4k buffer size, (can't believe I'd forgotten that setting even though I've used it before ^_^ ), but even that lags a bit... Guess I will try lowering it even further lol

Edit: Typo

It does, now I can kill two of your crits when you attack me as opposed to none before. LMAO

OTOH I now lack the logs since screen clears every 30 seconds or so. Oh well I'll just have to use my memory /cry ^_^

after loading the crits with a low buffer, set your main to a high buffer, that way it won't clear on that crit's screen.

What happens with the saved buffersize, doesn't it go in the .gid file?
If so, will it not load with the bigger buffersize on next load?

you are correct, although i have no idea what the .gid file is, the buffersize is saved in the registry.

That's what we normally do, but leaving 1 alt with a high buffersize and the rest with close to nothing works just fine. Only problem is, that now I have to remember logging off a crit with the low buffersize last. ^_^
