For instance:
Leyte attacked a Spider with his Rose Blade for 60 points of damage.
Leyte attacked a Spider with his Rose Blade for 60 points of damage, dealing an extra 30 points of damage on the backslash.
This would only be in effect when a Blade or Sword of sorts is equipped. No Halberd, Pike, CSotW.
The %, name and attack descript all might need a lil tweaking, tweak away.
If there was a way to like.. put this skill on weapons? So JLH wouldn't have to code it into the fighters "DNA" when they equipped them. It'd stand more chance of being implaced.
Please don't post, I like it but it'll never happen. We all know the likely hood of new nuts like this making it ingame. But if there's enough support behind it, at least we stand a chance.
Post the good, the bad and the ugly.

would make rose blade more valuable, also devalue halberd (not such a bad thing imo)
question: idea is nice but how does it stop fighters being boring?
it's plausible that the SOB hasn't spawned

Ok maybe they'd still be boring, but at least it would balance them out a bit.
And 50% might seem like much, but when you have a one in ten chance of doing an extra 30-40 dmg, it's not that much. It can always be increased or decreased as well.
- And ya, if you could post why you voted the way you did that would be helpful. -

I don't think fighters should ever have something appear under spells/abilities because they're just the class that don't.
But this would give them the small tweak (even if we make this happen very rarely), that could re-introduce them to a balanced level in the game again.
Don't get your hopes up on my comment on this though; I do think Paladin's would need to be tweaked first. At least pvm.
I'm speaking for a 1a perspective only on the balancing issues.

For player-versus-monster, Paladins would suddenly be the best class against certain undead horrors if they have a Sword of Light equipped, which I sort of like in that it gives them something to specialise in. Personally, I would like to see the skill given to both Fighters and Paladins, with the former either having a stronger form of it or it simply happening more often.
Other than level, what statistics would backslash rely on? Dexterity and Intelligence?
ADDENDUM: I think this feature would be fine on both 1-alt and multi-alt, although backslash in a player-versus-player fight may need to be investigated for balancing.
ADDENDUM DUO: There are some weapons other than swords and blades that could be used with backslash in reality, namely axes (especially double-headed ones like the Great Axe, and that particular weapon having a backslash ability will make it more appealing than the Halberd in the swamps, for example). What should be done about that one? I'm sensing it might be more flexible if weapons were given a new (and invisible stat) that states whether backslash will work with them or not.

I apologise for picking out the little details, but I presume missing and armour-absorption may happen on the backslash; if so, how would that be displayed? And how would it be displayed if the main attack missed or was absorbed, but the backslash connected?

but i really like the idea
how about make it so that if they attack and the backlash happens basicly the attack they just used refreshed that one stamina immidiatly so then you get to attack again
but maybe that'd overpower considerng then you could get up to possibly 10+ attacks, but lets face it lol a paladin or fighter doesnt really hti that hard uness they are hiting soemthign with spells

I still like this idea and think it would help balance fighters.

I don't know about you, but I'd be at the edge of my seat wondering if my next attack would be a backslash!!

50% extra damage is not that much tbh, an unspelled zerk with a warhammer (B26 weapon) can hit 660 in a round easily against lightly armoured monsters, a fighter with a sov (B30 weapon) hits around 360 against the same monster, if one hit gets an extra 50% damage its only 390 damage, if *every* hit gets +50% the fighter only does 540 damage, still inferior to the zerker.

I'd say it's a set % upon any "contact" with the weapon. If you miss then you stand no chance for backlash. So, I guess in a way Dex would decide it, if you hit the monster more you have higher chance of backlash.
I originally stated each weapon would be given the ability to backlash. But that seems like more work then necessary. I believe the easiest route would be to set Backlash to work with certain weapons only. As new weapons are added to game, they can be added to the Backlash list. That doesn't seem too hard..
I apologise for picking out the little details, but I presume missing and armour-absorption may happen on the backslash; if so, how would that be displayed? And how would it be displayed if the main attack missed or was absorbed, but the backslash connected?
Little details need to be addressed, I apologize for taking so long to address them x.x
As I stated above, I believe Backlash should work on any contact with the weapon, no matter the absorption. If an attack misses, there is no room for Backlash. I see two solutions. One, backlash is never absorbed (which would make the most sense imo since it's only 10-15% chance). Or, you could give backlash it's complete independent chance of getting absorbed or missed, such as a regular attack.
I also believe that with the current amount of damage Fighters do PvP, with the high AC that's out there, that this would in no way overpower Fighters PvP.
Clarifications? Questions? Comments? Post 'em.
