After four long and very turbulent years, I received my University results today and passed my degree! I was hoping to get something higher than a Third, but it is still a pass. My full formal name is now:

Mr. J. Gareth Moreton BA (Hons) (Oxon)

I never fathomed out why Oxford only award Bachelors of Arts degrees even for Science courses (I read Physics).

EDIT: Grammar error... not very good for an Oxford Graduate!

I don't understand the percentage stuff ya'll are talking about...
American universities do not use anything of the sort to my knowledge, anyone care to explain?

Me neither, but our school systems are entirely different. College is called MBO here, and your University is split in two here (them being HBO and University). I tried to compare type of grades, school system etc. before...it's hopeless.

Worry not - I will not be writing my name like that very often unless I am writing a letter to the Queen!

Unfortunately, especially in my first year, I let myself become extremely addicted to Nightmist to the point that it almost cost me my degree. I am disappointed at getting a low mark, but I am grateful that the four years were not a waste and I left Oxford University with more than just a £10,000 debt.

Despite the addiction though, I did make some very close friends over the Internet who really helped me pull through at times, especially Starwolf; I owe her more thanks than I could ever give, along with everyone who offered encouragement and words of wisdom. I have veered from the straight and narrow quite badly at times, letting online and real-life drama cloud my vision and severely damage a number of friendships as well as jeopardise my academic performance. Elf, the number of times I have moaned to you about trivial things and occasionally offended you to the point of disbelief - I do not know if I can truly redeem myself, but thank you so much for your continued friendship.

If Pandilex read this, he would probably comment about me going emo again, others reading might think this is a quitting post, and a Catholic priest might believe this is a confession! This is a confession of sorts, but I am not intending to be emo and I do not plan to quit just yet, although I am losing interest and motivation a little bit in the game. My main reason though: I owe many people a lot of thanks and a lot of apologies. Thank you all.

In england:

70%+ = first class degree - basically the best you can get
60%+ = Upper 2nd - second highest
50%+ = 2nd class - third
40%+ = third - lowest class
Anything lower then 40% is a fail

Well thats as i know for my uni any how!

The first part of the degree stipulates what field your in

Beng - batchlors in engineering
Bsc - batchlors in science

Hons - Honours degree is an extra amount of work on your degree making it worth more - usualy involves wriing a dissertaion

Nice one boys.

Just finished my Higher National Electrical Engineering first year with Merits and a Distinction in Maths
And I thought that was a relief, must be a great feeling! Good job with your results.

I've heard a good grade in a HNC/D may enable you to miss the first year on a degree course. Can anyone give me some better detail on this?

I doubt you can officially miss it. You might find that you could pass the exams at the end of the first year without having to learn anything new though.

Which makes you wonder what you would actually get for your £3000...

If it's anything like it's here, then there might be an option to take a test which includes questions about the entire year. If you pass that, you're allowed to skip the first year. It has to go through a commision in order to be aproved, so if you want a straight and truthfull answer why not just ring up the school and ask.
