i was looking at the auction part of the site tonight, there's some items on there from three years ago...do they ever actually sell or just go on and on and on?

depends on if seller stops auction..

auction is kinda screwed up coz it does not have a fixed sale time, the auctions go on until the seller has enough and sells it. That is why the auction feature has always been considered as nothing other than a novelty feature.

i think this should be fixed and a sale time limit should be made like a week or 2 after the first bid is made maybe longer maybe shorter just an idea

I think it should be set so that the seller can set a certain date he wishes to end the auction and if he gets a bid he likes, i think it should also be set so he can end the sell themselves to go ahead and take the price.
