I often thought that Nightmist could be more successful with a browser-based client. A lot of people these days prefer to play on their tablets, phones or direct from a browser without having to download software, at least if it's a small game with no graphics.

Online 2D games are becoming more popular on browsers, and I'm sure 3D MMO's will soon follow.

There is no reason at all why Nightmist should have a stand-alone client, given today's technologies, and the capabilities of modern browsers.

Not only that, the Nightmist client is windows-based. There is no support for Mac, iOS and android. A browser-based client would instantly resolve that problem.

I'm going to start developing a browser-based client for Nightmist. I very much doubt Jon or Simon would have any interest in this, so I will have to run my own server to test it on.

Nightmist 2 as a 2D game was just far too much work for 1 person to take on, so this will be my new project. Should it work well, I may decide to make an unofficial Nightmist sequel as a MUD instead of a 2D game. We'll see...

Instead of looking to develop the client as such, why not go down Oracle / Vagrant boxes? Something like what travis does for Open Source repositories? (Although that uses Docker)

Could spin up a VM, run it through your shell, and play, then tear down the box at close.

I've a few ideas for the client. The client itself won't function with this version of Nightmist because I have no access to the code. Unless JLH agrees for me to take over development, to which I have more chance of finding gold on the moon, then this browser client will be geared towards my unofficial, approved development of Nightmist 2.

At the moment I'm just playing around with .NET for the downloadable client, as I want to be able to run the client on Windows, Linux and Mac. If I can achieve that, then a browser client will come next, no just to be able to play on a tablet, but so you can play anywhere.

When I was younger, we had access to the PC's at lunch time, and when I got to college we also had access to PCs in every classroom. The issue was that they restrict downloading of EXE files, so I was never able to play Nightmist with my friends at school. If there was a browser-based client from the beginning, this wouldn't have been an issue. Obviously that's not the reason I'm doing it lol, but for the purposes of attracting more players, and being more flexible as to where and how they can play the game, it will definitely help to increase players because they won't be restricted to an EXE on a windows machine.

Infact, I bet a lot of the younger generation probably don't even use a PC as much as we used too, most of them either play games on consoles, or on their phones/tablets.
