I'm looking at Mages... you can guess that as I'm on the mage forum.
Mages are magic users yes... but they have a weapons slot too

So why are the mage weapons so much worse than the weapons of others? Indeed... why are mage weapons effectively useless?

The top base damage on a weapon a mage can own is 17.
Theres the cobalt with base damage of 27 (a pretty substantial increase! OTHER classes have weapons that take them MUCH closer to that figure) but that isn't readily available.
I'm sure never going to have 10mil to spend on one.

The Golden Staff has 20... but I'm not even sure that exists. Not truly.

And so most mages will eventually get stuck with 17. Mages don't hit well anyway... but surely they deserve a weapon thats SLIGHTLY higher?

I assume that its lower because Mages are probably not much good at physical fighting... but Clerics arent either, and at level 20/25 they can wield a 20dmg weapon... at arch that rises to 21...

Surely a well trained archmage deserves a staff of slightly higher calibre than the current Auric staff? Perhaps something in the range of 19base damage?

Yes that's only two base damage difference, and it probably wouldn't make any difference at all to the fact that mages can't really fight physically... but still ^^

What thoughts do other people have on the matter?

Sometimes, when in a party, I won't even bother using my mana until we come across a more difficult enemy.

...And poking monsters with that stupid Silver Staff is just pathetic.

Of course, if a better staff becomes available, chances are I'll still just use my Silver Staff, investing my money into armours and such rather than some shiny sword.

I see no reason a mage wouldn't have enhanced its weapon to be stronger than any other. Possibly something for the future..

Interesting!! :P
I'd never heard of that one, ever at all, so I don't know either ^^

The knowledge that it isn't available doesn't get rid of the sudden urge to log on a crit and go and run around the Dark Woods though, which is a little annoying ^^;;

(Happy nightmist birthday to you for yesterday :P)

Personally, I would like to see a Mage-only mana-leeching weapon, as there is a distinct lack of those in the game and they would suit Mages quite well. Although I can foresee the risk of it making the Mage too powerful and unbalanced.

And I don't see why it would make them any more unbalanced than a druid ^^
Druids can fight pretty well, heal a little and fight using spells that can be pretty powerful. They can also morph- at which point they regain health(okay at the expense of a lot of mana) and seem to hit harder.
If they, with their many uses for mp, can get a mana leeching weapon I don't reeeeally see why a mage shouldn't ^^

I'm not sure I'd actually like to see a mana leeching mage weapon as for some reason I think theres something iffy about the idea... but I dont think unbalancing the game is the arguement against them

Staff of Power = Mr_pirate's item.

I don't know where he got it or how.  He's the one with it though, don't believe he's ever had bids reach a price that pleased him enough to sell though.

*gasps and oogles* Mike wants....ehh...Never knew it was actually in game, would go very nicely on the 6/6 elf i wish i had :P

Can I test that with you when (if) I get Pyriphlegethon to arch? :P
(It should only take a few years for me to achieve that...)

That said... I never said mages couldn't damage things with spells ^^ I was just saying that they should have some good weapons too.

Its true, mine's lvl 26 and with 4 stam easily rounds things.

Calculator: 65*4 = 260

Calculator: 65*5 = 325 - at arch

Mages are primarily users of magic anyway. A mage's staff is more of a symbol than a weapon of war. The only use for the mêlée attack is for killing weak enemies (as Squee suggested) and/or conserving Mana. Although admittedly their top weapon that is readily available (Auric Staff) is very under-par.

Druids have a hawk talon that mana leech's very nicely, maybe instead of making the staff a mana-leech type, make it a mana protector,

ie it's magical property stops other's from stealing your mana, thus negating those pesky druids,

But yeah it would have to be a lvl 29+ weapon :P

There's only one Mana Leeching weapon in the game, the Hawk Talon. Why should Druids have to suffer? Mages become more powerful than Druids at that level anyway. Druids are probably one of the few classes that can take a Mage on, one-on-one.

The Golden Staff would solve this, if it was brought back into existance, with a price tag to match the golden robes,

And btw wasnt trying to make druids 'suffer' , it was just an idea. :P

The Golden Staff has a +3 Base Damage on the Auric Staff. Not only that but it's not magical where the Auric Staff is.

I realise that , which is why i suggested it, as for the 3 extra dmg points ya lose the magical attribute, to keep it even.

Well, if they're even then why should their price match that of Golden Robes? The Auric Staff is 30k (35k?) and Golden Robes are 75k.
