A bridge of parity between CSOTW, mod weapons, and craft-able weapons

Suggestion:  Introduce a way to craft a Cobalt Staff of the Winds equivalent.

A series of 3 weapons that can be upgraded:

1) "Cobalt Staff" shop purchase item ~1,500,000 gold  ~23 base damage,  lvl25 to equip,   ~.15 vamp

2) [first upgrade weapon name TBD]  same stats as Cobalt Staff of the Winds, can be obtained via crafting [Cobalt Staff] + craft items OR exchanging Cobalt Staff of the Winds with NPC.

3) [second upgrade weapon name TBD] same stats as Cobalt Staff of the Winds (except .3 vamp instead of .2 vamp), can ONLY be obtained by crafting the [first upgrade weapon] + craft items.

Purpose?

1)  From now on encourage people to go the build it route instead of the buy it route.

2)  Give legacy/grandfathered cobalt owners the option to either exchange 1 for 1 with the upgradable item, OR sell theirs back and go the build it route.

3)  Give zerks an entry level,  lvl25 shop purchasable item that can be seen as their training weapon.

NOTE: Its debatable, but I think increasing the CSOTW sell back to 9m would encourage players to go the build it path even more....

As a side note, there was some discussion about tinkering with base damage and vamp, and I think we need to keep clear separation between which items are better between the following vamp items:

7. "Cobalt Staff"

6/5. "Blood Axe",  "Demonic Axe"

4/3. Cobalt Staff of the Winds,  [new CSOTW equivalent]

2. [upgraded .3 vamp CSOTW]

1. DragonClaw Scythe

just throwing this out there but blood axe and demonic axe being 10% vamp would make your little list of what "YOU" think is best a little wrong already. How can something that is better be ranked lower than weaker weapons? Just wanted clarification.

Thanks for the post guys.  I had wanted to remove the original Cobalt Staff of the Winds simply because it was too good and made bosses like the Time Knight and Blue Dragon pointless to go to, and all you had to do to get the endgame weapon was save up 10,000,000 gold.  I tested the waters by reducing the vamparic rating from 0.3 to 0.2 to see if I could remove it completely with a refund, and the reaction was... unpleasant.

I'm liking the idea of having different objectives with the craftable weapons... the Dragonclaw Scythe and the like are great choices for raw damage output, while the Cobalt Staff is good for general purpose use and for survivability, especially if it's upped back to 0.3.

I've got a lot to think about it seems.

P.S. I try not to consider quest items too much, although obviously I have to keep them in mind.

To Greg's point,  the original suggestion of stats for the tier 1 "Cobalt Staff" are probably a little high.  Something more like 23 base and .1 vamp  OR 18 base and .15 vamp and a 1,000,000 price tag in line with other training weapons.

The goal with the (tier 1) weapon is

1) provide an affordable survivability weapon, so people can pick between mod weapons or survivability when training

2) provide an entry point to start the crafting of tier 2(current cobalt) and tier 3(.3 vamp cobalt) vamp weapon.

For a tier 2 (current Cobalt) in crafting form, it will probably still be slightly weaker, at least as far as base damage is concerned.  The tier 3 one can be the full original stats, but a higher level than 25.

Here's an idea that could be pretty nice.

Glowing Cobalt Staff (Lets call it this for now) - Craftable Weapon 20 BD with 10% Vamp. Make this weapon a not so easy craft but doable by the less fortunate.

1alt is all about survivability so should really have some easier option.

But then instead of making the Cobalt Staff of the Winds 30% again, make people work for the extra 10%:

Glowing Cobalt Staff of the Winds - Glowing Cobalt Staff, Cobalt Staff of the Winds, Elfstone, Withering Scarab and a Golden Flax Cord = Glowing Cobalt Staff of the Winds.

27 BD, 30% Vamp

Obviously needing the Scarab will encourage people to kill Imhotep which is pretty much a lost boss on 1alt. Not to mention the farming of the Elfstone!
