When elf is used as another word for fairy, they are small, however, we are talking of Elves as a race, therefore they are tall.

I think in The Lord of the Rings (the only reference given to me), Tolkien states that humans were taller. I believe in either/or the Silmarillion or the Fellowship of the Ring.

I always imagined elves as being reserved, and as a result thin. I associate height with being thin ("tall and thin"), so I usually imagine them as tall.
However I could quite concievably make them short, and I don't feel there's any sort of absolute right or wrong that can be made from this. In certain situations I could quite happily think of elves as being shorter than humans.

edit: *sigh* thebooks are not handy, referring to dictionary
http://dictionary.re...om/search?q=elf
No mention of the 'race' elves there at all. I think it would be cool if the fairy elf race would be put into the game somehow, and a special class of their own. I suppose gnomes are king of like that though.

Elves can be tall, short, fat, thin, ugly, dumb, super intelligent, whatever. It's all up to your imagination.

In every single rp I have ever been in and i do mean every. Not counting dark sun Elves in all the pictures even the Jr tolken rp realms of middle earth even though there was a huge discussion on that one at one point.
When you see a pic of an elf standing beside a human they are always shorter and thiner. This goes with the fact that in the woods they hide easier. If a creature was truly bigger than a human then they would be more lumbersome and they would be more noticable in forests. Dark sun even says that no one knows why the elves are taller in this time when prior to that they were shorter.
In any Myth or folk lore where elves or a race simialar to elves is mentioned they are always depicted as i described. I see no reason at all why Nm should be different.

Next if you mean the books. In fellowship of the ring he describes Gimly and legolis standing toe to toe over who will take the ring. he describes gimly a short dwarf as only being slightly shorter that legolis.
In the Rp the return of middle earth writen based soully on the books so that people could table top rp lotr on pages 237, 265 and 374 it shows pictures of an elf next to a dwarf he is about a foot taller, Next to a hobbit he is a foot taller if that. and next to a human at least a half foot shorter.
At the back of the book for the rps by the way there is a bueatiful disclaimer all pictures descriptions and settings approved by J.L. tolken. Not the righter of the book his wife.
I agree with warlord they dont exist so they can be what you want. But dont use an example when you dont even obviously know.

Well if it wasn't for humans in real life there wouldn't BE no elves would thereok a movie where the actors are humans in real life decides if elves are tall or short.
it's not like an ape or a dinosaur invented the book. Plus my statement was a simple, harmless joke that you didn't have to take personally.
