Ok, ive been wanting to roll a thief of my own, and the first thing that came to mind when i was considering the race was "Ok, what would affect my ability to assassinate and steal?", and i immediately thought DEX. So then i thought, ok Halfling is the perfect race for thieves. But then i checked the top thief rankings to see what other people were using, and much to my surprise, i found a majority of dwarves, who are hampered in Dex, with a max 18. So this is my question, Is a higher STR and CON really more desireable than a superior DEX for a thief? Wont a low DEX cause failed coverts, assassinations, and, uh, steals? Or am i completely mistaken and those abilities are dependent on something else completely? Im so lost...

Im leaning towards dwarfs. they seem to be the better of the two, even though halflings have a dex bonus on dwarfs...

But with the new area if you happened to aquire those +2 str gauntlets and a couple dex items I think halfers have the upper hand. Besides lower health.

So really im confused now

Best Dwarven Thief- 23 x 20 21 18 x
Best Halfling Thief- 20 x 23 18 18 x
From that, I'd go for Dwarves completely.. But, as with everything, that'd cost you alot of gold to make that thief... Plus you'd need the gloves -sigh-

To conclude (at last) I try to go for a mix, although I started with Halflings, my dwarves seem to level faster.

If you want a Thief, use Halfling.

If you want an Assassin, use Dwarf.

I have both, I prefer Dwarves myself. The higher hp, stronger hits, plus the fact that I dont use my thieves to steal perhaps. I assassinate monsters. The time and effort needed to steal the gold isn't really worth it to me personally.

hm i dunno why everyone seems to be liking dwarves more, i def perfer halflings, lately the hp on dwarves isnt even that much better then halflings and dwarves tend to fail often...plus who doesnt love being able to get 23 dex

23 xx 19 21 18 xx for dwarves and 20 xx 22 18 18 xx for halflings...remember -sgs cuz thats there u put gauntlets

gnomes are like the little red headed step child, they dont have better str then halflings they have less dex then them and they have less charisma, so halflings are basically better, unless you plan on facing a big bad mage. humans have better dex then dwarves but not as good of str, theyre stronger then halflings, but have less dex. so their what i would say is best for thoise people who want to steal and assassinate.

you could just make a halfling thief 21 x 21 18 18 19 or a dwarf 21 x 20 21 18 17. personally, with the new gauntlets, id go far halflings

What are the skills dependent on, though? Like, i heard the Covert is dependent on CON (?), and im guess Assassinate is, like Smite, just a glorified attack, and therefore dependent on STR (I more than likely am wrong, its why im asking), and Steal is dependent on DEX. Am I right? Or what are they dependent on?

I train a lot of thieves and i would have to dsay that dwarfs are much better than halflings. i have a lvl 20 dwarf with 21 x 18 21 18 16 and a lvl 20 halfling with 18 x 21 18 18 18 and the dwarf although he levels slightly slower than the halfling because he misses more often. he is far superior in the way of assassinating enemys of both monsters and players. that and the HP difference is about 35

Constitution affects how quickly your stamina drains while you are Covert - the higher it is, the slower it decreases, so you can move around a lot more. I'm not certain whether it plays a role in Assassinate and Steal Gold.

If you want a Thief, use Halfling.

If you want an Assassin, use Dwarf.

i agree, i prefer dwarves now though cause you cant power train anymore.

I have 7 hling arch thieves and I love them. You can duel/pk/steal/bosses the whole anty. Dwarves miss too much for my likings I used to have 2 5 stat dwarves and when dueling/pking without spells they just didn't do the trick for me. With aoh and sgs they are a little better but with aoh and sgs on a halfling 23 dex = nice.

I'd go for hlings.

I think i prefer dwarves, as they seem to train faster...but i tried using one in a 4v4 duel and hardly hit anything. So, maybe halflings are better

I just like doing fun damage against Hedge Lord and similar bosses

Once i don't need to use my thieves as much for training support as i do now (mainly i find they are good for carrying mana, lol) i may start hitting people with them, then i'll be better placed to say which i think is better

Definately Dwarves. In my opinion anyway, and i have both halflings and dwarves.

i like halfling thief best but right behind it is gnome .. and human thiefs r whacked .. the seem to miss more then dwarfs .. maybe its just me

Honestly, I like a variety.

Lvl 22 Halfling
Lvl 20 Dwarf
Lvl 19 Halfling
Lvl 19 Dwarf
Lvl 13 Gnome


Gnome is only their to hold items, and take important gold to run with if worst comes to worst, But I believe that a gnome thief would be extremely lethal in a party.

screw dwarves and hlings, choose gnomes!

i would choose dwarf ... better con for moving in covert... better natural str for assasinate ... only thing that lings are better is dex and you can easily make up for dwarf dex with few items such as sg:s ... or the ammy which is rather expensive tho.
