gaddy, kudos for creating the most thoughtfull eyesore i've seen so far.
you know, i never liked this game because it was free. thanks to that crappy mmo engine that steals final fantasy tiles there's a plethora of free RPG's designed and hosted by nimrods that are totally free. yet, no one really plays them because thier crappy, buggy, made by 12 year olds, and actually look worse than snes games. i can imagine the developers, "what? but it's free!"
i liked the game because there was a window that i was around for where people didn't take the game so seriously. most everyone had fun. the staff weren't rigid authoritarians then, there wasn't a need for that. areas came by as much as they ever did, there weren't complex but no one was all that concerned. the window is certainly closed now, and there was drama then too, but it was minimum constant drama that comes with people. the insanity that you're pointing out here is not like that at all. the reasons that people were able to play the game back then without freaking out were...
1. better pvp. i know classes are better balanced now, but that's not exactly a great thing. pvp now is one of two things now: a coin toss, or a scale. a coin toss where people with matchable classes, stats, items, and skills battle eachother to no discernable victory. didn't win the first time? two out of three. three out of five. it doesn't matter. it's really like a coin toss so much of the time. the other battle is like a fight for tipping a scale. you apply as much weight to one side to claim victory in a non-battle. truly pointless. i think this probably causes a lot unneccessary drama, because you can't settle any who's tougher than who with a "who's richer than who" fight or a coin toss, or much less, words.
2. the ride didn't cost so much to go on. in order to play nightmist, you need a crapload more than you used to in order to be competitive or keep up with the costs of an ever increasing alt collection. now even though the alts pay for themselves, you make a non-returnable deposit of time. you don't get that back. so nowadays just getting by takes what? atleast four or five times the resources and time committment? it only makes sense that people wouldn't generally take this kind of an investment lightly. it may just be a ride, something to enjoy, but when you turn it into a job with shifts you aren't playing to have fun, and it doesn't help the community either.
the fact that this has been a recurring theme for awhile now tells me that i've been around too long. it also tells me i'm not the only one who's been here too long. nightmist has a serious linear streak in it's design and i think a lot of us have followed the only path available long enough that we know whether or not this applies to us. nightmist can't change to even out our power struggles, and none of us are going to ever get the best of anyone else without deluding ourselves.
