Didn't you read this entire thread?

LOTR doesn't dictate what the fantasy genre is. People (i.e. us) are the ones that decide what it is.

If you want elves to have 6 legs, purple-skin and want them to be too pretty to be men, all the power to you. (However, if you did that and called them elves, it'd be a very confusing story. ^^;;)

I made a statment of fact thats all.

Don't get confused by fact and opinion. What you said is an opinion, not a fact. As Elves don't actually exist, so there is no evidence what-so-ever that proves you to be right/wrong.

didnt u watch lord of the rings lol, they are just as tall as humans..rofl

Look man, you don't watch LOTR, the LOTR movies aren't real.

Neither are the books, but if you are going by LOTR at all, than the books are more standard.

Don't say "Don't you watch LOTR???" That's just stupid (or as deval would put it, 'ignorant'"

Anyway, no, LOTR does not decide fantasy genre, however, it is an old and classic fantasy book, and many people look to it for a standard.

The question still remains: Are elves short or tall?

Secondly: Who decides whether elves are short or tall; the answer: the people, hence, this poll!

People decide what elves look like; the individual. To have the masses dictate what fantasy is or should be is just wrong and it is a mockery to the whole Fantasy genre.

Dont matter what you think elfs look like the fact is every elf ever drawn/made/painted looks the same and are all based along the same lines... Thats just like me say a wookie from star wars is small, skinny and bald with pink feet everyone knows its not :)

Not all elves look the same. ^^;

Remember those elves that wondered into the Shoe Maker's house? If they were as tall as the Shoe Maker himself, I'm pretty sure the ending to that story would be a little different. ^^;

Elves hardly all look the same. Here is a few different interpretation of Elves from a simple Google Seach

Clearly, while there is still room for imagination and/or invention, Elves can by anything you want them to be. I even have a book at home which used to be my mothers about forest myth and faeries, which dictates many many differents types of elves.

In my mind Elves are tall, thin and very graceful, with fine features and a delicate look about them.

When I think shorter then humans, I think Halflings.

thats just my opinon tho :)

I think that elves come in all shapes and sizes, just like humans do . . . theres people out there that are over 7ft and people under 3ft . . .

You get my point lol

No, actually, in different games, elves are short.

And have you read the LOTR books my friend? Have your read all of Tolkien's works?

I swear...if one person makes another LOTR reference... *twitch*

Okay, it was a great series. Tolkien can write well. Whoo hoo.

Do you honestly think Tolkien gets the last word in what elves look like?

Edit: If you do, stare at your screen without blinking for a while. If you do it long enough, you'll start to see some stupid images (like an elephant eating a muskrat) and then, if you keep doing it, a phone number will appear (toll free!). Call that and you'll be entered into a draw. Chances are 1/10 that you'll win!

want a tip? go to the bookstore/library and find what section LotR/Harry Potter are in, its called fiction, they can be a number of different sizes/shapes (fat skinny etc)
its called using ur imagination, stop living inside the box and break free, stop letting ppl tell you how to think... do something on ur own for once, now in my opinion, elves are mid-height (5'-6') with excellent vision and hearing(long ears)

now some ppl can say they cant see shyt, and are telepathic with no sense of hearing, and its OK, its called a PERSONAL OPINION, get one and be good. well i ruined this post, :)

and u ppl complain about communists, your letting hollywood decide what ur imagination decides, hell elves can be porn stars who walk around naked (if ur into that kinda stuff)

According to the Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook V. 3.5, the base height for humans is 4' 10" for males 4' 5" for females. The base height for elves is 4' 5" for males and females. Though this is one reference in my experience I have found that most people believe elves to be slightly shorter than humans. Though once again nothing is written in stone, so its all on how one percieves elves I suppose.

Apparently, if you look at the poll, elves are tall!

It's true, many people try to look at standards*cough*Tolkien*cough*, that aren't really standard. However, it is human tendency to want a leader or a standard or something.

OH, and YOU Squee.... making contradictory posts...

Here we go:

LOTR doesn't dictate what the fantasy genre is. People (i.e. us) are the ones that decide

Notice: People, us, and ones are PLURAL!

To have the masses dictate what fantasy is or should be is just wrong and it is a mockery to the whole Fantasy genre.

Hmm, seem to have a different idea there.

The common conception of elves follows the D&D description - despite what many of you would like to believe, the creators of D&D did do a great deal of research in the creation and development of the game and based most, if not all, of the creatures off repeated references of such things in Fables, Myths & Legends, Fairy Tales, and Folk Lore – Elves are simply the larger kin of the Fairy Folk (pixies, fairies, brownies, sprites, etc.). Whatever you convince yourselves of to be the case in Nightmist, most games will adhere to this standard.

Nightmist, and a few other obscure games may choose to deviate from the standard, but it only serves to mislead knowledgeable players for a short time, and, in my opinion, takes away from a game’s credibility. If a game wants to deviate from a standard conception, it should be consistent about it and not use standard goblins, gnolls, dwarves, halflings, etc., but only change elves.

Not to mention Nightmist has a D&D based foundation…

I honestly dont understand why so many people would make such a long thread debating the height of a non-existant fantasy based race of people. I did'nt even want to read it all, your all repeating the same god damned thing over and over again, and have actually come up with a standard yourselves. Elves are w/e the moose you want them to be. Lotr is not the mooseing bible to tell you wot everything in fantasy should be. There, opinion made, get onto another subject already :P
